A Letter to Emma by DestinyBlue A Letter to Emma by DestinyBlue
Dear Emma,

I write this as a friend. Well, you're my little sisters friend really. You grew up together, often round my house, playing in my garden, I've watched you grow into a wonderful young woman. So maybe I write this more as a sister. An angry sister.

I'm upset because someone called you names:
'Ugly' 'Worthless' 'Disgusting' 'Childish' 'Boring'

To come from a stranger they would be bad enough. But to come from your boyfriend; the person you are supposed to trust most, must be so hard.
I am angry because these words are not true. You are none of these things.

But when someone calls us something, I know how the words can sit on your skin, and before you notice, they push deeper, into your blood and bones, they turn into the script we read from. Their ugly echos worm their way into your thoughts, actions, being. So deep you don't even feel them as something else, they are feel they are part of you. 'ugly' 'useless' 'boring' become the foundation of your wall. And it saddens me to think these words your boyfriend said might stick to you. It's our partners words we should be able to trust most of all. They are supposed to see us in the rose coloured light, build us up, and be our best ally.

'Beautiful' 'Funny' 'Positive' 'Trustworthy' 'Kind'

These are words that truly describe you Emma. I don't know why your partner didn't use them. Why he didn't want to bring you up rather than put you down. Only he knows why.
I can't tell you who to be with. I can't tell you what's right for you.
I can tell you I stayed too long with someone who wrote bad things on my bricks, and I'm still in the process of scrubbing them off.
All I can advise, with everything I have (and that's mostly drawing) is, however right it feels like they fit, to not slide those bad bricks in. Fill yourself with good ones for all you can, for if we hold 'beautiful' as a brick in our foundation, there is no place when someone hands us a brick of 'ugly'. We can just throw it away.

Emma. You are Beautiful.

Lost of love, your sister friend,
Blue xx

Yes, Emma is real, I drew and wrote this for her after I heard her boyfriends words. It 's not about telling her to leave. It's about supporting her. Having stayed in a bad relationship myself  (with my first partner, not my most recent, wonderful one) I know the real damage is done internally, and someone telling you to leave isn't much help. But someone building you up, and supporting you emotionally, really does help you think twice when you are treated poorly by someone who supposedly loves you.
She said I could share the letter/picture because lots of other people probably need a 'Beautiful' brick too. See, I told you she was kind :) She asked her name be changed so her boyfriend didn't get any abuse.

Peace, Love and Supporting Each other,
Blue x

Wow, this is beautiful, both in art and words.  It's truly touching and eye opening.  I went through something very similar a little over a year ago now, and I so wish I had someone to tell me not to let those bad bricks be my foundation.  I'm so glad that the internet has this now, for all those people who may be going through something similar.  Your art and words are always so uplifting, Blue, thank you and thank Emma for sharing this.

Is it symbolic of something? Or is it because the artist flub the sketch but went with it.
So many questions...

Piece name: A Letter to Emma
Artist: DestinyBlue

Negative:
Once again the only bit I can pick up on is Emma's left our right hand I think it's meant to be the brick on the end of the fingertips but it comes off as a little elongated in the fingers and doesn't seem to quite match.

Positive:
This is super sharp lines very fresh, clean, and defined, the details in all this are amazing! The writing on the bricks where it's slightly gappy brilliant! Just everything about this is rather wonderful it all seems spot on. The idea of bricks to help you build is great also bricks are often used in violence so it has a real grittiness to it and the words seem harsher because of that.

Summary:
A very distinctively sharp piece, very clean airy feeling to it overall spectacular except for that hand but otherwise amazing great, great job Blue!

Personal Note:
I love the idea of you helping someone else like this, I love the personal touch in a different way, I almost didn't critique this one cause it felt so personal to Emma and yourself like I was walking into the middle of a conversation, I've always respected your boundaries and worried sometimes I may have overstepped them at times maybe I worry too much? but I always think you'll let me in closer if you wanted to or it feels right for you. Anyway! Wishing Emma the very best in her present and future :)
I have to admit I felt sad hearing someone so close at one point would have made you feel like that and it's had such a lasting effect on you, it makes me sad as I see the warmth and good in you but I know how tough you are too! Maybe scrubbing the bricks isn't going to much anymore, maybe you need a different approach to cleaning those bricks? if they can't be replaced that is :) *now speaking to self* anyway that's enough you! you're not Freud or anything XD

Please note that DestinyBlue has asked me to do critiques on her artwork.
If you disagree with my critique please don't hesitate to say so but please keep it constructive, thank you :)

If you would like critique on your artwork please send me a note on deviantart.

Thanks

Love your message, be careful about the bricks (and thoughts) you build your character upon.

The colors are magnificent, the girl glows with inner strength. The red / magenta area around the face caught my eye especially.

Such a gorgeous piece. I hope Emma is able to move on from her abusive relationship. I have a friend that was in the same boat, but she was able to leave. They do have a kid, though, so that makes it even harder. :(

I feel ashamed that I didn't say anything at first, but I hope it's not too late for me to say I wish her the best and that she sounds like a wonderful person.
She is not only fortunate to have a friend like you, but to have a friend like you who loves her enough to share something like this and bring together so many people with nothing but kind words for her.

Much love and support to you Emma (I'd use her real name if I knew, but I hope Emma is good for now).

Obvious she is a true beauty. To want to protect someone who was so cruel to her. She is a better person than me so I will be angry on her behalf, although I bet she would not want me to be.
You DB are likewise a gem for creating this incredible piece for her.

This is such a thoughtful image of healing Blue, I truly love it. It's such a beautiful thing to see deep and meaningful art like this dealing with mental health issues and promoting wellness, you send a positive message to others dealing with these kind of issues and how to properly address them. I hope you realise how rare it is to see this kind of thing and know that what you are doing is important for people and that you keep it up. I really hope you've been well and look forward to seeing more from you soon :)
