Don't watch me draw... by DestinyBlue Don't watch me draw... by DestinyBlue
She clutches her sketchbook to her chest as she sees you peering over. "S-sorry, I just wanted to see what you were drawing" you stammer as she frowns. "You might see more than you bargained for if you go staring at peoples thoughts" pouts the girl.

I bet you can imagine what inspired this! ;) I reaaallly dislike when someone stares or leans over me to see what I'm drawing; you would never dream of doing that if someone was writing their diary! I don't mind if people ask, but it's personal stuff....

How do you feel about people watching you draw? Any stories to tell..? :)

Peace, Love and Privacy,

It happens sometimes, and I'm that type of girl that likes to be left-- alone.
I mean, it's okay for people to talk to me, just not when I am drawing or brainstorming something.
And also, I just really loathe it when someone sits next to me while I'm drawing (I don't know if I'm paranoid or what) but I feel as if they are judging my drawings (which are not... that good.)

But the most annoying thing is when they start to ask questions when it's not yet done.
I mean, could you please get your ass patient? Judge it later when it's done. Kirino Kousaka (Tsundere) [V1]

It doesn't happen too much, but I can always see someone glancing at my sketch book out of the corner of my eye. I almost always pull it up and get all embarrassed because half the time its either reflecting my thoughts or feelings. Sometimes I'm ok with it though if its a friend or something, but even then I still try to hide it. Blush

I always have my sketchbook with me, especially in school, so I doodle a lot, especially because my best works come from just a pencil and a sheet of paper since I'm not that good digitally.^^ But yeah, people peering at my sketchbook... Ugh. Of course, when you're sitting at lunch and drawing instead of eating or talking, it draws attention. Still, drawing's have to be drawn the moment the thought or feeling comes to mind, not "saved for when no one's looking"...

god, i hate it when people looking over ur shoulder or demand to see your sketchbook. yes, people have actually demanded to see my sketchbook. it gets really annoying.

I was drawing random people in a library for practice, and a guy asked me if I was drawing his girlfriend. I admitted that I was, explained what I was doing, and said if he sat there long enough I'd be drawing him too. I personally don't mind too much when people try to look because my art is mostly from imagination more than emotion, but I don't really like people to see a work in progress, because it rarely looks all that good till it's almost done :)

This boy who sits next to me in math class, he always wants to see my drawings or sketches. But he won't ask me politely or anything, he says things like, "Why won't you let me see? It's dirty stuff?"

It might seem "sexy" to some people, but I like drawing sex scenes, but soft sex scenes.

I absolutely /hate/ it.

I'll be drawing something like a ship, my characters, or whatever and this one guy always leans over to me and says
whatcha doin

I kinda got used to it after a while when I started drawing in my classroom. Though I still hate it when people lean over to see, or try to take my sketchbook away to see what I drew, I partially got used to it.

I can't do anything at all when people watch me, draw, dance, even write things down, so I can totally relate. It's also the reason I got a spot in the back of the classroom at school :)

I can relate myself. :)

When I was in art school a decade a ago, I didn't mind when Evie (our art teacher) was looking down at us, watching us draw, it was when I got home that drove me up a wall. My parents ALWAYS asked the "who", "what", "where", and "why" and making me want to smack them. :fuzzydemon:

Fast forward to 11 years later (just turned 27-years-old 2 weeks ago, BTW)! If you go to my gallery (I don't mind my fellow DAers browsing it)! you can see why I prefer my privacy with my art. :floating:

I'm Bi-Sexual, so a lot of my art is GBLT Community/Family related, and yes. Ever since I figured out Sailor Uranus and Neptune are each other's girlfriends has only made me love Sailor Moon all over again! Which BTW; I hope Sailor Moon Crystal KEEPS the original reference for them, even though Season 3 has yet to be on TV still... :fuzzydemon:

Also, another reason why I love Beka Spade! Her Alternative Universe on Sailor Moon is amazing! Her paring is Soldier Uranus and Soldier Sun (both guys) and I just adore that! :floating:

Anyway, here is her link:…

OK! Getting WAAAY off-topic here... I draw and color my art when my parents are at work, out on date night, on some little unexpected business and/or pleasure trip (my FAVORITE time to work on art)! or just whenever I have the house to myself and when I find the time! :floating:

Questions? Comments? Don't be shy! Reply back here! And again I say, check out my gallery, please! :tighthug:

My art is terrible (just starting out) so I don't like when people watch me "in the process" as it were as it's very clumsy but finished products I don't mind so much... I am much more protective of my writing though...

P.s Even though I am only commenting on this I am looking at much more of your work and it's beautiful. I really like the eyes of your pieces....

This happens all the time to me in class. That's why I stick to drawing at home.
AutumnZodiac Featured By Owner Mar 29, 2015  Hobbyist General Artist
This happens in art class with me all the time... when we have a free day and can do whatever we want with whatever materials .3.
I was sitting down in the corner alone quietly (People think im like sad and lonely when i do this but its quiet there -3-) and someone came over and tryed to see what i was doing and i just closed my journal and looked at them.

Sadly people cant understand why i draw something, just by looking at it. So when i do vent art they ask ALOT of questions. So i hate being watched while doing it
Art-chan Featured By Owner Mar 29, 2015  Hobbyist Traditional Artist
Well only people at my house see my draws...even if I don't want to. Maybe it's because I prefer drawing while watching TV in the living room lol

Well, I'm known as the best drawer in school, and when I draw, people are constantly looking over my shoulder to see what I'm drawing. Just so happens, I'm, like, ADDICTED to drawing 'My Little Ponies'. How do you think I feel when people see me drawing kiddie stuff?

This picture is perfectly describing how I feel in these situations. Thanks for drawing it. Makes me feel like I'm understood by someone. :)

I have a lot of younger kids in my extended family, and they always love to watch me draw. But I like to draw some dark stuff and unfinished doodles in my sketchbook, and I always have to watch out for them when I do. Many of them ask me "Why is he/she naked?" because my unfinished works often don't have clothes...  But it's not like they're detailed! Much

What's worse is when my sketchbook is unattended and random people start going through it. I like to show people my stuff, but only certain things to appropriate audiences.....

It's so true. And the worse part is I draw at school (Yay perfect time to be drawingFacepalm ) and I like Edgar Allen Poe (So that's what  mostly draw). So I hate it when someone looks over my shoulder and yells 'WHAT YA DRAWING?.' The least they could do is wait

This Lulu Thorn and find your artwork amazing. Sorry about the rant Giggle :happybounce:

Exactly the same feeling. I despise people looking at what I draw. I only let people see if I'm done, and I want criticism. No exceptions. Unless they kill me

It's probably not the criticism I'm afraid of receiving when people look at me draw, but - same as you - the very fact that they are looking. I guess creating art really is an intimate and personal process that requires alone time to delve into your own world and bring out the best thoughts and colours and concepts. :D

That's so me! :D (Big Grin)  I hate it when people watch me draw so I usually only draw when I know I'm alone. I don't like the criticism, especially if they compare my art with theirs. That really bugs me .__.

Sorry .. this is creepy but.. I was viewing your work yesterday night and I was looking at this one before I went to bed.. and I had a dream about this picture.. I had people watching me just today! Yes, it's totally discomforting. I don't see them, but I feel their presence, and they don't speak but I immediately notice every little thing that's wrong with my art. It makes me so self-conscious, and it's so hard trying to just ignore them! >_<

This picture perfectly describes me when my professor is watching me draw. XD I get nervous and I don't like it how he watches when I draw (I guess because a professional is watching me and I'm...basically an amateur trying to get better) ^^;

I love your drawings
ArtGuyCharlie Featured By Owner Mar 23, 2015  Hobbyist Traditional Artist
In general, anytime I'm doing anything beyond a little doodling, I focus really hard on my art to the point that tune out everything else and don't really notice other people unless they're sitting next to me or at the same table (in which case they're most likely someone I like enough to not mind them watching. I'm pretty open with my friends emotionally, so I don't mind them watching). So the only time I've ever really been aware of someone watching me draw was if I was told later or if they start talking to me.

Whenever I'm told later it wierds me out a little, but more from the "someone was watching me and I didn't realize it" angle than the "stranger watching me draw" one. When someone talks to me while I'm drawing I immediately have a big "WTF don't do that" feeling. If they then proceed to say intelligent or insightful things to me, the WTF will be somewhat alleviated. But more often than not the WTF feeling gets agitated when they start saying stupid and meaningless stuff. Such as "Who's she?",  "What cartoon is she from?", "I can't even draw stick figures", "Oh yeah, that's the girl from that one show, right?" (more often than not, I'm drawing something original), "You should draw [random person I don't know]", "Do you draw porn?", and my personal biggest rage-inducer "You need to draw her titties bigger".
