Don't watch me draw... by DestinyBlue Don't watch me draw... by DestinyBlue
She clutches her sketchbook to her chest as she sees you peering over. "S-sorry, I just wanted to see what you were drawing" you stammer as she frowns. "You might see more than you bargained for if you go staring at peoples thoughts" pouts the girl.

I bet you can imagine what inspired this! ;) I reaaallly dislike when someone stares or leans over me to see what I'm drawing; you would never dream of doing that if someone was writing their diary! I don't mind if people ask, but it's personal stuff....

How do you feel about people watching you draw? Any stories to tell..? :)

Peace, Love and Privacy,
~Blue x

It makes me feel self-conscious, like the person will think I'm weird for what I'm drawing. -_-

Ugh, I HATE it when people stalk me as I draw. People, even my buddies, tend to be reeeeeeeally judgmental and jump to conclusions. I was trying to draw two people side by side, and I always start with a circle guideline for the head, and this kid thought I was drawing something innappropriate. =(

I understand that well sort of. I'm trying to get a lineless art jornel so anyways I understand the circle guide line thing cause I need a base for everything I draw or else it doesn't look like it doesn't have limbs or at least if it is a thing that does have limbs like a person or an animail. I do sort of have a habit of peaking into other peoples jornel cause of my curisoty. I'm trying to stop. I better stop this comment now or else it would be the leagth of a novel.

"You might see more than you bargained for if you go staring at peoples thoughts"

Heh...I'm going to start saying that now when people say they just want to see what I'm drawing. It happens quite a lot...it's why I don't like drawing when there's other people around. People have no idea how frustrating it is when they insist that you let them go through your sketchbook...  :(

I recently took a drawing class at my college, and it was extremely frustrating and uncomfortable because we had to draw in class, where the teacher and other students see what your drawing. I get upset just thinking about it. I don't think I'll ever take another art class again. I'll just stick to online/book tutorials and tips from other artists. I did improve from the class, but just how constantly unnerving being in that class was outweighs the satisfaction of the little improvement I made.

This reminds me of my time at school and how I used to have pages ready in my sketchbook so that if anyone looked over I would turn to the page so they couldn't see what I'd actually been drawing. I did that because I found that letting people see the 'real me' through my drawings lead to me getting hurt.
I find that letting someone see anything precious or meaningful to you is giving them a tiny glimpse into your soul and if you're ridiculed or bullied for what they see then it hurts deep down, like opening up to someone and then them using it against you.
There is nothing more you can offer than to be yourself so when people don't like the real you, you're forced into putting up a charade or becoming someone else which is damaging and isolating to your true self, you become detached and this is how I felt throughout school. Not able to truly be me and not wanting to be anyone that I was not, this lead to many hours of solitude and finding solace in my only comforts like drawing that I wasn't going to let anyone destroy.
Thank you for the beautiful artwork, it's inspiring and it brought back a lot of feelings.

I was really bothered by that some years ago,a lot actually, hopefully now I just don't care and have learned to let go of the fears.
I have nothing to hide, neither to myself neither to others, and I do not care anymore of the judgements than people's can have or what they think not only of my draws but of myself.
They can like me or dislike me that's not my problem,it's about them and themselves not me.
It's extremely liberator to let go off that, and you can have interesting things happening when you allow people to see and comment your draws openly and willingly (like on deviantart but in real life) even more during the process of drawing, when the point of view of someone else can give you new ideas and perspectives and the draw can therefor earn more depth and more richness.
In fact the less you fear the more creative and inspiring people's you will attract and the more the draw will be awesome.
Not technically but "spiritually" or "energetically" some would say.
On the contrary the more you put yourself in a state of stress and fear the more you are likely to attract people who will make bad critics and put you down, making the draw and yourself more miserable.
So if I have an advice for everyone who is bothered by that it's:
Let Go!
Yes it's hard at the beginning, yes you will have some bad critics along the way,but at the end,you and therefor your draws will take so much diversity and goodness from it,than you will feel much better.
About yourself and about showing your Draws even to total strangers 😉.

mm... When I draw, it could honestly be anything at all. For the most part, I don't even notice when people are peering at whatever happens to be sketched on, but sometimes I write personal stuff and people get that look and I kind of scoot back like pleasedon'tdothatthanks.
There are a few people that I think I could live with them seeing my stuff...
but there are a few things you just aren't sure. I know the feeling. x3

I am constantly drawing sketches and things for the book I'm writing, "The Violet Wars". (It's on wattpad). I hate it when people look over my shoulder at the sketches and ask what they are because A) they're usually fluffy and senseless anyway B) I don't like how they all turn out and C) they want to know what it's from, and it would take ages to explain. Especially it happens to be a nude, or a sensual scene. "The Violet Wars" is a sensual story, so it makes sense that some drawings wouldn't be pg-13. But I get judged anyway. Ugh! And also, sometimes I'm not drawing stories, I'm expressing inner thoughts and nonsensical things that apply to me and me only. Introverts hate sharing those kinds of things.

I was once drawing a picture of a cute lil' pikachu for a girl I like and she, yes, SHE, came up behind me and asked what I was drawing xD
I was all like, "act smooth."  It was a birthday present for her because she said she didn't want anyone to buy her a gift.
I don't know if she knows I like her, but I do know she already has a bf she likes very much, and i even think he is a cool guy, so not much of a chance there :P

It really just depends on what I'm drawing. The majority of the time is just anatomy practice; mostly females. It actually makes me laugh when people ask why I'm drawing "naked people" and breasts. It's just part of the human body, and it's also MY sketchbook. I shouldn't be afraid to draw a nipple if I want to get better. Besides, I love the human body. It's beautiful.

If it is personal though, I won't let others look. Artists are supposed to express their feelings with simple lines, and some of those lines can be very secret.

Even though she is my best friend, and also an artist... I still feel completely self conscious and anxiety ridden when she peers at my work. Stresses me out.

However, I once had a German gentleman, when I was living in Germany - visibly peer and strain his neck to look at my sketch... So I turned it towards him with wide accusatory eyes, and he said "Oh, sehr gut..." with a blush on his face. Haha.

It kinda depends on what I'm drawing... If I'm drawing something that's not relevant or something, then it's fine. But, if I'm drawing something that relates to my mood, or something a little darker than that, I hate when people look.

It happens sometimes, and I'm that type of girl that likes to be left-- alone.
I mean, it's okay for people to talk to me, just not when I am drawing or brainstorming something.
And also, I just really loathe it when someone sits next to me while I'm drawing (I don't know if I'm paranoid or what) but I feel as if they are judging my drawings (which are not... that good.)

But the most annoying thing is when they start to ask questions when it's not yet done.
I mean, could you please get your ass patient? Judge it later when it's done. Kirino Kousaka (Tsundere) [V1]

It doesn't happen too much, but I can always see someone glancing at my sketch book out of the corner of my eye. I almost always pull it up and get all embarrassed because half the time its either reflecting my thoughts or feelings. Sometimes I'm ok with it though if its a friend or something, but even then I still try to hide it. Blush

I always have my sketchbook with me, especially in school, so I doodle a lot, especially because my best works come from just a pencil and a sheet of paper since I'm not that good digitally.^^ But yeah, people peering at my sketchbook... Ugh. Of course, when you're sitting at lunch and drawing instead of eating or talking, it draws attention. Still, drawing's have to be drawn the moment the thought or feeling comes to mind, not "saved for when no one's looking"...
