Don't watch me draw... by DestinyBlue Don't watch me draw... by DestinyBlue
She clutches her sketchbook to her chest as she sees you peering over. "S-sorry, I just wanted to see what you were drawing" you stammer as she frowns. "You might see more than you bargained for if you go staring at peoples thoughts" pouts the girl.

I bet you can imagine what inspired this! ;) I reaaallly dislike when someone stares or leans over me to see what I'm drawing; you would never dream of doing that if someone was writing their diary! I don't mind if people ask, but it's personal stuff....

How do you feel about people watching you draw? Any stories to tell..? :)

Peace, Love and Privacy,
~Blue x

One of my friends always tries to peek on what i'm doing. Really, art is like your thoughts. I don't think anyone would like someone reading their mind

True.
I draw outside sometimes and always have to choose somewhere there are no people because they always peek at my drawings, if it doesn't look pretty to them they would like surround me and laugh at it
*sighs* how rude.

Beautiful picture, I love her expression. Little Pixel Heart

To me, drawing is very personal.  A lot of people don't understand, but what we draw is like our thoughts and feelings.  Like you said, I don't mind if people ask, but they have to be okay with me saying 'no' sometimes.  I feel really pressured and limited when people watch over my shoulder though.  Art is a progress.  What may look horrible while they're watching me, will probably look good when I'm done.

Another problem I have is that they never ask to watch until I'm suffering with a part of the drawing.
Then I'm like... 'uh... right now?  Couldn't you have asked like... five minutes ago or something?'

Story? Yeah one! Once I was drawing my monster, Screecher, on my page I think it is.. but I was drawing her. I was at a summer camp and I was in the cafeteria with my back to the corner, maybe 10 feet away. I didn't want people to see me drawing things that came from that ... deep?.. of a place.. I think you know what I mean, I was drawing horror. But suddenly I hear "HOLY- ok I'm having nightmares tonight" it was one of my guy friends, I closed my book but he had already seen.. his reaction was funny though =P

Also beautiful piece :D

I hate it when people try to look at what I'm drawing. It's like they're trying to barge their way in and ruin my very few escapes from the insanity of my life.

I ALWAYS feel so awkward and on edge when people do that! It's so personal. It's like they're asking to look inside your soul. I feel that same way when people look through my music collection.

I'm kinda neutral about people watching me draw, as long as they're not looming over my shoulder and breathing down my neck |D but I especially hate it when people ask me if I’ll draw them something..cause I’m normally too nice to say no ; v ;

It seems I'm an oddity, compared to the others who have commented here.  Personally, I like it when others look at and comment on my work.  Like many people, I suffered through bullying as a kid - so now anything derogatory that someone might say about my art is old hat.  If someone wants to be a dork, I just shrug them off and move on.  If they want to offer a constructive criticism, I take it as their own personal viewpoint; spend some time thinking about if they have a vaid point (or, if it is valid, whether it's a point I want to take to heart and work on), and thank them for their input.
On the flip-side, I've found some great artists (not to mention great friends) from people who peeked at my work and offered some insightful opinion on it.  I've also had some great suggestions on directions or sources of inspiration that I would never have considered on my own.  Fellow artists like to see one another at work in order to analyze, find inspiration, and consider new approaches to their own style; art aficionados (those who have not honed the skill themselves) like to take a peek into the creative process, and see what's "behind the scenes."  The way I see it:  who am I to deny them the joy?  Who knows what might come of the matching of minds?
Funny enough, my pet peeve is when I actively solicit someone's opinion and they're like: "Oh, that's nice."  Usually, if I'm asking, it's because either I know that something's amiss with a picture and am looking for a fresh eye, I want a "public opinion" or I'm asking for critique from someone whose work I consider more skilled than my own.  Not getting any feedback is like: "Okay, why did I bother?"

How do you feel about people watching you draw? Any stories to tell..?
I don't like it when people at school peek over my shoulder to see what I'm drawing, to be honest. I appreciate their curiosity and their kind words, but still...I think that asking ''May I see what you're drawing, please?'' would be okay. Sometimes artists don't really want to show their art for many reasons (because it's too depressing, personal, embarrassing, etc).

Btw, this is awesome (honestly, like the rest of your artwork). And the girl is so cute!~ X3

I've read a small bit of your story and I'm so sorry to hear that you've been through rough times. I've also been kinda depressed and, to be honest, I'm sad. I might have even lost pretty much all my Christmas spirit, too. But I don't want to make you sadder, just want you to know that if you ever need someone, I'm right here, okay? And the people who are in this group Standing-Strong , will also be glad help you.

Keep up the great work hun. <3 And stand strong. -hug-

A sketchbook is like a reflection of me. Some people keep diaries, but for some of us, it's a sketchbook.

I always get SUPER annoyed when people try and peep into my book. Especially when I'm so clearly drawing in like this "Don't disturb me" defensive position.

I have too many stories to tell about 99th is kind of feeling.
Once in 7th grade, I painted a portrait of Eleanor of Aquatain for a history project in a giant sized sketch book I had, I taped the bottom shut so no one could open it. It got around to a few people and then suddenly I look over and this kid is undoing the tape and beginning to flip to the 2nd or third page. I had to quickly sprint across the room and retrieve my sketchbook.

Another time a friend of my really wanted to see my sketchs and paintings, and even promised not to laugh, but eventually started laughing, I think it was mainly because she was nervous, nothing personal.

And once when drawing with my tablet on DAMuro my mom looked at the screen to see what I was working on and said "don't draw yourself like that, you're not ugly".

I have also received numerous amounts of what the commenters considered helpful criticism but are actually somewhat rude comments about what they don't like or think is "stupid" or "looks weird".

I don't take any of it personal, I get that some comments I receive can be genuine insults but some people are ignorant and don't know so they ask.

I used to feel that way a couple years ago, but now I never really draw anything personal, lol. As long as they don't ask questions or say anything bad, then I just let them look and continue drawing.

Plus, I SUCKED at drawing back then. Lmao.

People usually make fun of me for my drawings of anime, dragons, and other things that I practice/ work hard on. They deliberately pick on me and I usually clutch my clipboard to me when people I don't know/trust ask about what I'm drawing out of pure defense. It bugs me a little to feel people staring over my shoulder (unless it's my bff who is always curious of what I'm doodling) and makes me nervous.

I don't always mind it when people watch me draw-what bothers me is when they take my sketchbook out of my hands when I'm still kinda like "Um..." then look through it, occasionally criticize, etc. Like... I don't have anything particularly personal in my sketchbook but like... some things in there aren't very good drawings, and I'm embarrassed for people to see them?

I am okay if people watch me draw if they kinda stay quiet or just have a normal conversation. But if they are like:"What's the story?" What is that?" "What does it mean?" Then it's no.

Beautiful!  And I think many many people know how you feel!

I almost always draw characters or people.  And maybe it sounds really silly but I always feel like when I'm drawing it's a moment of deep connection with who/whatever I'm drawing.  Like it's just me and them, their thoughts and feelings and a kind of understanding between us, and everything else disappears.  Someone watching during that moment of discovery....kind of dampens it.  Like now you have an audience and that connection isn't as strong because someone is watching it.

Well, if I watch someone drawing, I don't look at what they're drawing. I just find beautiful to watch people passionnate about what they do, but always do that in a way they can't see me because I know they wouldn't like it. Just like I feel embarassed when I noticed my boyfriend is looking at me while I'm busy doing something else.
