Don't watch me draw... by DestinyBlue Don't watch me draw... by DestinyBlue
She clutches her sketchbook to her chest as she sees you peering over. "S-sorry, I just wanted to see what you were drawing" you stammer as she frowns. "You might see more than you bargained for if you go staring at peoples thoughts" pouts the girl.

I bet you can imagine what inspired this! ;) I reaaallly dislike when someone stares or leans over me to see what I'm drawing; you would never dream of doing that if someone was writing their diary! I don't mind if people ask, but it's personal stuff....

How do you feel about people watching you draw? Any stories to tell..? :)

Peace, Love and Privacy,
~Blue x

i hate it when people watch me draw

Its is sooo good!

I hate showing others my writing unless they're finished. I don't like them trying to see what the story is about before it's actually finished!

Your art is just beautiful, and I can totally relate, especially now. I came back from a huge fight today online, and I was so upset I blamed myself.

But then I saw the Butterfly Project, and I felt better. I have a butterfly drawn on my hand now, since I can't reach my heart, where it really hurts. It reminds me of my friend who told me not to leave. I thank her for that and I do hope that your artwork keeps inspiring me.

I hate when people I don't know watch me draw. I'm fine if it's someone I know, but otherwise, I don't like it. The worst is when people try to guess what I'm drawing. Random person: 'Oh, so you're drawing a cat who doesn't like that other cat, right?'    Me: 'No. That's a fox hunting a rabbit.'

Wonderful piece, by the way. The lighting and symbolism in your art is always beautiful.

I feel HORRIBLE having people do that, it's just rude an mostly some stuff I draw in sketchbooks aren't gorey or anything like that but... you probably know what I mean. you're exactly right, it's like a diary! That's why I don't post much of my sketches on here.

I absolutely hate it when people I kinda don't know look at me when I'm drawing, or even to look at my drawings...

im too protective...
kaikaitanner Featured By Owner Jun 16, 2015  Hobbyist General Artist
Okay, I'm used to be watched at this point because all my ideas come when I'm in school.
But you know what really bugs me?
People thinking that giving me input on what to do is okay.
Because I plan out every tiny detail in my mind before I even start drawing.
So input like
"Oh! I think you should add a girl here!" and "They should be doing this!"
Is completely unwanted and unneeded.
The worst part though is not only taking my drawing, but changing anything on it.
I have had countless hours of my life whisked away by some person in my class saying "I'm making it look better!" and erasing half of the drawing.
Excuse me?
Last time I checked, this was my drawing and my idea.
Not. Yours.

Sorry for the rambling, but I get really worked up over this.
Anyway, the picture is great!!

I can't remember if I commented on this before, so I'll just do it again.   :giggle:

The one detail I like most about this is how she's held her left hand (the next-most-liked detail is that she's left handed in the first place) in such a way as to not only hide the drawing, but protect the sketch book and the pencil by bending the wrist away from the book.  People who don't draw would have placed her left fist against the book.  Nice touch ... but then, you have the Midas touch, my dear one ... EVERYTHING you touch turns to BLUE.

Aww she looks adorably sad ;^; I totally agree with what your saying
Personally it is THE MOST annoying thing x'D
"Oh my gosh, are you drawing? Who is that? Who's that from? Can you draw me?"
The pure stupidity of the questions people ask just racks my brain. My friends of all people are the worst, they will literally stick their heads in front of my drawing and stare at it. But I know they're just doin this to be annoying :/ And then there are the people who have the NERVE of criticizing my drawing, God help me I don't choke the next person who does that.
JovySanchez02 Featured By Owner Jun 15, 2015  Hobbyist General Artist
I also feel the same way! When I draw and somebody suddenly leans in, I instinctively stop... I just can't help it... I feel uneasy whenever someone does it, so I will tell them that I do not really enjoy when people stare at me when drawing.. they can stare from afar, since I can't see them and all.. hehehe :3

Omg same-
Well, okay, maybe not in the way that I usually convey it
You see, I'm quite the pushover and a bit of an introvert when I draw in a public place so when someone is sitting or standing close to me and stares while I draw, my shoulders tend to tense slightly and I clutch my sketchpad close to me and as far away from peering eyes as possible, hoping that they get the message. Unfortunately, I think that probably attracts more attention now that I think about it. So when people ask to look through my sketchpad, given my previously mentioned push-over nature, I usually opt for just turning to the beginning (or what I want them to think is the beginning if there's some shit that really sucks, is really weird, or is very personal in the actual beginning of the sketchbook) and handing the person my sketchpad. I then proceed to awkwardly watch them flip through, proceeding to explain stuff to them if they ask all the while mildly shaking and feeling my face gradually become a little pink mess. And then they hand it back, tell me I "draw good", and watch me proceed to say a quick thank you while I wear the kind of smile that usually says "taking the fucking picture already" except no teeth. And then I just carry on by staring determinedly back at my sketchpad, getting a sudden yet harmlessly temporary case of artist's block, putting my sketchpad away, clearing my throat, and trying to find something antisocial to do.

That's exactly how I feel when someone tries to look at what I'm drawing! But sometimes they'll even take my sketchbook when I'm not looking and go look in my private drawings, but I can't tell them off because I'm physically incapable of doing so.
snowshadow2867 Featured By Owner Jun 14, 2015  Hobbyist Artist
Don't frait, i'm sure their enjoying what their looking at. So even if you get embarrassed. You should keep in mind that now that art lives in someone else's memory.
inuzumi23 Featured By Owner Jun 12, 2015  Student General Artist
I'm like this all the time! My family especially loves to hover over me while I draw, and then have the nerve to question everything I am drawing and make me feel bad and weird about it. I've learned to ignore them mostly now but it's still annoying. Honestly my only safe card is my cousin who is 10 and is always asking to draw with me when we are together so he can "learn to be as good of a drawer" Everytime he says it, its like he's pulling my heart into the biggest embrace a kid is capable of.
LordJanthran Featured By Owner Jun 8, 2015  Hobbyist General Artist
if i want to randomly sketch something out when i'm already talking to you, fine, whatever. but if you see me sitting at a table by myself wearing headphones and drawing without looking up.. leave me alone. I'm too nice to tell people how much it pisses me off, which sucks.

Same. It's not that I draw vulgar or sexual art or anything, but i'm just really concentrated, and I feel nervous and hate it when someone is peering over me and watching me.
MikeBennett1980 Featured By Owner Jun 7, 2015  Hobbyist Traditional Artist
I'm the same way. It's not that I'm drawing anything vulgar or obscene, it's just that I like total privacy when I'm drawing, but my family never has been able to comprehend that. :(

I guess it's because I need total concentration, and I can't do that when someone's hovering over me. ;)

i get really uncomfortable when someone looks at me draw cause im afraid they might criticize me with bad words that's why i seclude myself while I draw because one time i got criticized and it hurt,im not going to show my drawings until im ready for it. Im just too scared.
Geishadow Featured By Owner Jun 12, 2015  Hobbyist Digital Artist
You shouldn't be afraid of critique! Even if it's bad, you can learn from your mistakes. If the person who criticized you with bad words,or insulted the artwork completely, try and make them feel how hard it is to draw. You shouldn't be discouraged!
wheatleykawaii Featured By Owner Jun 13, 2015  Student Digital Artist
Wow..i never really actually thought of it that way ;w; thank you so much for making me understand the importance of criticism! But i'll just keep secluding myself until im ready though! Constructive criticism could be nice.
ibtissammoumneh Featured By Owner Jun 6, 2015  Hobbyist General Artist
well actually it is annoying most of the times because u just can't focus on what you're drawing anymore if someone is there watching .. when my drawing is done and I give you the permission to see it, u'll see it, till then .. leave me alone with my thoughts.

I get fairly defensive when someone tries to look at my art, which I always hide, and when I ask my friends not to look they get really pissed at me and sometimes tell me off, It's my art why do I have to share them, it's almost as if someone is tearing into my being, it hurts me, I don't know why it hurts me but it does, even my family doesn't stop from trying to sneak a peak at my art, my little sister had even sunk into my room once to take a picture away, which she then traced over it and told my mum that SHE drew it, It was like someone stealing away a bit of myself especially since I had put my heart and soul into that picture only for someone to take the credit. I don't know why it's anyone's business as to what I'm drawing or why they feel the right to get pissed at me for not letting them peak over my shoulder.

Your art is truly amazing, I love it so much, it's nearly like reading a fantastic book every time I look at your art, very beautiful indeed. :)
Jchrispole Featured By Owner Jun 5, 2015
I got a story to tell, actually.

I was on a plane fight sitting next to a person I had never met. I was drawing, but I was kinda hiding my drawing because back then, I didn't like people to see my drawings either.

Later in that plane fight, that man sitting next to me actually talked to me. He told me that he was a part-time professor at a college, and he did a lot with the media arts. He told me that he noticed that I was actively trying to hide my work, and that you really shouldn't be afraid to show what I can do; even to strangers.

So I kinda learned that yeah; drawings are like your own personal thoughts. But if you kept all your thoughts to yourself, nobody would ever know what you were thinking.

i'm weird because i don't like when someone does this, just stares over my shoulder as i draw. however, if they just want to look through my sketchbook, i let them.
Haroku-Beast Featured By Owner Jun 4, 2015  Hobbyist Digital Artist
it's hard because even though you can't see them, they're there watching you. you start to doubt yourself, and your cheeks grow red.

you'll see more than you asked for over an artist's shoulder
sweetxxrain12 Featured By Owner Jun 4, 2015  Professional Digital Artist
My friend was trying to explain to a programmer why artists didn't like having their sketchbooks looked through without their permission. She also said that it was like someone asking to look at your diary.

I hate it when people ask to look at my sketchbook.  It's personal. I know I should be sketching outside more often, but I don't want people looking over my shoulder. People who aren't artists don't understand that they are being unintentionally rude.

Anyway, I love your painting!
